What a Landmark LED Facade Costs

How structure, drive, control, maintenance and site conditions shape landmark-scale LED facade pricing.

One of the most searched questions about large-format LED is what the Burj Khalifa’s facade display cost. The figures that circulate are widely reported estimates, and we were not involved in that project. But the question behind it is a real one, and it is worth answering properly: how is a landmark-scale LED facade actually priced?

Landmark projects are priced as construction, not as displays

At building scale, the display becomes one trade among several. The cost structure looks closer to a facade renovation than to an AV purchase.

Three things that decide the budget before any screen is specified

1. How you will reach it in year three. A facade that needs a crane closure to change a module has a very different ten-year cost from one with permanent access. This decision is made at design stage and cannot be revisited.

2. What the building can carry. Existing structures frequently need reinforcement. On retrofit projects the structural work regularly exceeds the display cost.

3. Whether it moves. A static facade is a cladding problem. A moving facade — rotating layers, opening panels, kinetic elements — is a mechanical engineering project with a display attached, and it needs a safety case for a structure moving above a public space.

Why pixel pitch gets cheaper at this scale

Landmark facades are viewed from tens or hundreds of metres away, so pitch can be coarse — P10 and above is common, and transparent or mesh products are frequently used to preserve daylight and reduce wind load. The display is often the least expensive part of a landmark project per square metre. The money is in structure, access and control.

What we do at this scale

joeqing builds the motion structures behind landmark displays — rotating layers, opening elements, the drives and control that move them, and the safety systems that stop them. We work with the LED supplier of the project’s choosing, or supply the complete system.

Frequently asked questions

How is a landmark LED facade budgeted?

As construction. The display is one package among several — structure, foundation, power supply, maintenance access and permitting all sit alongside it, and on tall or exposed sites the structure is usually the larger number. Budgeting from a per-square-metre display price will be wrong by a wide margin.

What decides the budget before any screen is specified?

Height, exposure and access. How high the installation sits sets the wind load and therefore the structure; how exposed it is sets the rating; and how you reach it for maintenance sets a cost that runs for the life of the installation rather than once at handover.

Does a landmark facade need to move to be worth it?

Not always, but motion is what makes a landmark read as a landmark rather than as a large sign. A rotating landmark display changes silhouette as well as content, which is visible far beyond the distance at which pixels resolve. That is a design decision with a structural bill attached, so it belongs at concept stage rather than at fit-out.
